Meta buys robotics startup to bolster its humanoid AI ambitions
Meta has acquired humanoid robotics startup Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI) for an undisclosed sum, bringing the team into its Superintelligence Labs research division. ARI builds foundation models enabling humanoid robots to perform physical labor like household chores and to understand, predict, and adapt to human behaviors in complex environments. The startup had raised an undisclosed seed round from AIX Ventures. Co-founders Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang will lead efforts in whole-body humanoid control and robot self-learning. Pinto previously co-founded kid-size humanoid startup Fauna Robotics, which Amazon acquired last month. The acquisition reflects the broader industry sprint toward humanoid robotics, with market forecasts ranging from Goldman Sachs’ $38B projection by 2035 to Morgan Stanley’s $5T estimate by 2050.

Hilton Partners With Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI to Launch AI Planner, Framing the Guest Journey – Not Just the Booking — as Its Competitive Battleground
On its April 2026 earnings call, Hilton confirmed the launch of the Hilton AI Planner — built on Anthropic’s Claude — and formalized AI partnerships with Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic to expand guest-facing and internal capabilities across its global portfolio. The AI Planner integrates Hilton’s hotel content with local venue and activity recommendations, designed to keep guests planning, discovering, and ultimately booking within Hilton’s own ecosystem rather than senging guests to OTAs. CEO Chris Nassetta described AI as one of the greatest productivity opportunities in Hilton’s history and a way to use scale as a competitive weapon.
The strategic logic behind the AI Planner matters more than the product itself. OTAs monetize the discovery phase; Hilton is trying to take it back. If AI Planner can insert itself into the discovery phase, the 18-25% OTA commission never happens. This is not a feature upgrade. It is Hilton’s direct response to the structural economics that have transferred hundreds of billions of dollars from hotel operators to distribution intermediaries over the past two decades.

From napkin folding to national ambition: Inside South Korea’s $33M push for physical AI
Robots are being trained at South Korea’s Lotte Hotel Seoul using body‑camera footage that captures staff’s detailed service skills, such as folding banquet napkins, cleaning glassware, and preparing banquets. The recordings are used by AI startup RLWRLD to teach humanoid robots to replicate these motions as part of the country’s broader “physical AI” initiative to embed AI into robots that can work in real‑world environments. This effort includes a government‑backed project worth about $33M to record the “instinctive know‑how” of master technicians and industrial workers in a database, and reflects South Korea’s ambition to compete with major players like the U.S., China, and Japan in humanoid and physical‑AI robotics. Hotels are a key testbed: current humanoid robots still take several hours to clean a room that human attendants do in about 40 minutes, but Lotte hopes robots will eventually take on cleaning and back‑of‑house event tasks by 2029 and could handle roughly 30%–40% of this work, while human staff remain central for guest‑facing service, with a longer‑term vision of renting advanced service robots to other hospitality and service businesses and even homes.

Wellness tourism hits $894B, forecast to reach $1.4T by 2029 at 9.1% CAGR
Wellness tourism is now a $894B market, having doubled since 2012 and surpassed pre‑pandemic levels by 36%. It is forecast to reach $1.4T by 2029 at a 9.1% CAGR, sitting at the intersection of the larger tourism and wellness industries. Consumer demand is strong, with about one in ten travelers in Europe and the U.S. pursuing wellness trips and many travelers seeking spa, nature‑immersion, and mindfulness‑led retreats. Crucially, wellness spend is resilient: consumers in downturns are less likely to cut wellness spending than on clothing or entertainment, which suggests the segment can hold up better than many other travel categories.

That effort quickly took shape as CloudKitchens, one of the earliest and most well-funded entrants in the ghost kitchen space, backed in part by significant investment from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
