#68 - “The ChatGPT Moment for Robotics is Here”: CES 2026 Rings in the Era of Physical AI
Techne Times Issue #68
The message of CES 2026 was definitive: the era of ‘someday’ is over. As Gary Shapiro, CEO of Consumer Technology Association (CTA) noted on the mainstage, “If electricity defined the last century, AI will illuminate the next.” While 2024 and 2025 were defined by “Soft AI” chatbots answering questions from behind a screen, 2026 marks the definitive shift to “Hard AI” – intelligence manifesting in matter.
This transition embodies Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s “scaffolding” metaphor, where we are beginning to distinguish between “spectacle” and “substance.” We now have a clearer sense of where AI is headed, but also the harder and more important question of how to shape its impact on the world.
From autonomous kitchens to agentic lobbies, the world of hospitality has become the critical testing ground for machines that must reason through the “messy” variables of the industry. We are witnessing the birth of a cohesive operating system where AI has matured from an experimental side-note into a fundamental profitability engine.
Some highlights of CES 2026 powering this new era include:
Physical AI & Advanced Robotics: Unsurprisingly, advanced, adaptive robots stole the limelight at CES 2026, with NVIDIA launching new open models, frameworks and AI infrastructure for physical AI. This shift aligns with Nadella’s outlook on the trajectory of the technology: “There are three broad domains for AI application. One is cognitive and knowledge work... The other is physical: robotics, the autonomous domain, drones…. The third is science.” NVIDIA also unveiled commercial robots and autonomous machines for virtually every industry developed by partners including Boston Dynamics, Franka Robotics, Humanoid, and NEURA Robotics, all built on NVIDIA’s robotics stack.
Autonomous Vehicles & Redefined Mobility: This year marked a pivot from EVs back to autonomous driving, specifically targeting Level 4 systems where no human intervention is required. Highlights included the unveiling of Nuro-Lucid-Uber “Gravity” robotaxis, ultra-premium driverless cabs setting the standard for safe, sustainable, and scalable autonomous transport globally. Waymo debuted the “Ojai”, a purpose-built vehicle designed for mass scaling across colder climates. Meanwhile, Tensor’s luxurious Robocar is the world’s first agentic vehicle for private ownership. Designed from the ground up for Level 4 driving, it features massage seats, a Dolby Atmos sound system, and a spacious cabin to create a lounge-like atmosphere. Beyond the vehicles themselves, technologies like Aumovio’s window projection are turning car windows into digital canvases for personalized guest messaging and immersive brand experiences.
Intelligent Kitchens: Today’s kitchen is no longer a collection of tools but a suite of fully integrated autonomous agents, making dining more accessible, time-saving, and deeply personalized. wanAI’s AIChef Ultra and Nosh’s RoboChef showcased compact, precision devices pre-loaded with 500+ recipes designed intelligently handle everything from ingredient prep to cooking, with wanAI’s AIChef Ultra even actively minimizing food waste. Meanwhile, Samsung’s theme was “Your Companion to AI Living,” led by the Bespoke AI Family Hub Refrigerator – the first home appliance to feature built-in Google Gemini. It also launched its Bespoke AI Wine Cellar that acts as an “intelligent sommelier” by tracking wine cellar inventory and suggesting pairings. Other innovations included Cozytime’s AI-powered grill, Lumo, and Bosch’s Cook AI that uses agentic AI to help users create perfect meals with Michelin-star precision.
Housekeeping Robots – Housekeeping technology officially transitioned beyond basic floor-cleaning discs to advanced, multi-skilled robots capable of interacting with the physical world in high-touch environments. LG’s housekeeper robot, CLOiD, is the centerpiece of their “Zero Labor Home” vision, with articulated arms and five-fingered hands designed to fold laundry, load dishwashers, and assist with meal prep. This drive toward high-utility robotics was echoed by 1X’s NEO, an OpenAI-backed humanoid capable of tidying shelves and setting tables, while the Roborock Saros Rover finally overcame the “stair barrier” with a unique wheel-leg architecture that autonomously climbs and vacuums steps. Beyond general maintenance, specialized agents like Primech AI’s Hytron debuted as a dedicated solution for sanitizing restrooms, while Zeroth’s Rovie (”Clutterbot”) uses on-device vision to systematically clear toys and floor debris. These innovations, alongside Samsung’s Bespoke AI Jet Bot Steam Ultra—which utilizes infrared stain detection and 100°C steam sanitization – signal a move toward an “Embodied AI” ecosystem where robots serve as proactive, intelligent infrastructure for the entire guest environment.
The Inflection Point: AI as the New Operational Infrastructure
2026 marks the “Maturation Moment” where AI has transitioned from isolated gadgets to essential infrastructure integrated into the physical, operational, and service-based layers of our industry. This shift is ultimately about moving from what to adopt to how these tools fit into a single, cohesive operating system touching every point of the guest journey. By bridging the gap between digital reasoning and physical action, travel and hospitality are moving beyond reactive responses toward a proactive, synchronized environment that anticipates needs before they are even expressed.
This integration allows for a level of hyper-personalization and consistency that was previously impossible. From autonomous kitchens that can potentially recognize and adapt to specific guest preferences to autonomous vehicles enabling extended brand experiences while literally on the road, the guest journey is now becoming a continuous, proactive loop. Ultimately, these technologies are transforming hospitality into a friction-free environment where the operational backend drives higher margins while freeing human teams to focus on the high-touch, empathetic service that truly define the industry.

88% of Senior Travel Executives Report Positive AI Impact as the Race to Agentic Systems Intensifies
Based on a global survey of senior travel executives, Phocuswright’s latest study, Budgets, Barriers and the Race to Agentic AI, reveals that generative AI has claimed the top spot on the travel tech agenda. Cited by 28% of companies as their primary investment priority for the next 18 months, AI has surpassed all other categories. While adoption is widespread – with 83% of travel firms currently utilizing the technology – most deployments remain tactical, typically accounting for less than 10% of total tech budgets. While 88% of travel leaders report a positive business impact, the report highlights a critical readiness gap: very few feel fully prepared for full-scale implementation. As the industry moves toward 2026, the competitive divide will be defined by those who can bridge integration and talent gaps to transition AI from an experimental project into core travel infrastructure
